SUMMARY:Western Museum of Flight Overview with Dale Hoffman and Jack Trost
DESCRIPTION:TRA is continuing to provide opportunities for TRA members to convene online and to hear from interesting speakers.  On Monday\, June 28\, 2021\, TRA is sponsoring an online Zoom event with Dale Hoffman and Jack Trost for an overview of the Western Museum of Flight. \nThe Western Museum of Flight is an aviation museum located at Zamperini Field\, the municipal airport in Torrance\, CA. It houses not only historic aircraft\, but also has an extensive collection of historic photographs and blueprints. \nThe Northrop Corporation established The Southern California Historical Aerospace Foundation in 1979 to operate the museum to demonstrate\, preserve\, and promote the proud heritage of the aerospace community in Southern California. As members of TRA\, you have been instrumental in the growth and contributions to the aerospace community for over a century. \nThe museum has several rare aircraft among its collection\, including the second Northrop YF-23 Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) 5th-generation stealth fighter demonstrator. Also on display is the first Northrop YF-17 Cobra\, a lightweight fighter which was the basis for the Boeing (originally McDonnell-Douglas) F/A-18 Hornet currently used by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. In addition\, the collection includes a Grumman F-14 Tomcat and a Douglas A-4A\, plus numerous other notable jet and propeller-driven airplanes. \nDale and Jack’s program to the TRA membership at this zoom event will describe the heritage of the foundation and how the museum carries out its charter through community outreach. \nJack will give a virtual tour of the many aircraft\, spacecraft exhibits\, artifacts\, and displays housed in the museum. \nThe online event will be on June 28th\, 2021\, at 1:00 to 2:30 PM Pacific Daylight Time. Please plan to join us for what will be an interesting talk. \nOnline registration for this event is required and is available at our website\, www.tra-spacepark.org. The Zoom meeting details will be provided by email upon your registration. You will be able to submit questions in advance and ask questions at the end of the talk. If you can’t join us in real time\, we plan to record the event and the recording will be available through our web site to our paid members. \nJack received a B.S. in Engineering from UCLA and an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from USC. He joined Space Technology Laboratories (STL) in 1961 after spending five years with North American Aviation as a wind tunnel test engineer characterizing the aerodynamic performances of the company’s notable aircraft: T-39 “Saberliner” executive passenger jet\, B-70 “Valkyrie” super- sonic bomber and X-15 hypersonic research aircraft. His early assignments at STL were to provide systems engineering and technical direction in the field of fluid dynamics on the Titan ICBM pro-gram. He later developed the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory applied research facility. Jack was the assistant program manager on the early stages of two high energy chemical lasers: the space-based “Alpha” and the airborne laser “COIL”. He retired from TRW in 1995 and is a past president of TRA. Jack serves on the board of the Peninsula Symphony Association and is also a docent at the Western Museum of Flight. \nDale holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University and an M.S. in E.E. from UCLA. He came to California in 1958 as an aerodynamicist with the L.A. Division of North American Aviation (NAA/LAD) where he participated in the design and operations of the X-15 and preliminary designs of the Supersonic Transport (SST) and Apollo programs. The lure of spacecraft attitude control systems design and analyses took him to Space Technology Labs in 1968. With STL/TRW\, he participated in the Minuteman III ICBM\, Space Shuttle Avionics\, HEAO design and operations as an analyst as well as other national space systems programs as functional and program management. He retired from TRW in 2001. To keep his interests active in the aerospace field\, Dale became a member of the Western Museum of Flight after retirement while also doing consulting to Northrop Grumman and JPL. \nTo register for this event\, please fill in the information below and click on the “Register” button. \n  \n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.

SUMMARY:Computer-Side Chat with Jeff Grant
DESCRIPTION:Zoom chat with Jeff Grant\n\n123 fellow retirees and members of the NG/TRW Facebook group signed up to join Jeff Grant for a virtual chat on September 18.  The participants spent time catching up with old colleagues before spending an hour getting insights from Jeff about his experiences in the intelligence community\, working at TRW and then NG\, and life as a retiree. \nMost of us know Jeff as the former Vice President and General Manager of the Space Systems Division within the NG Aerospace Systems Sector\, a position Jeff took after the retirement of Dave DiCarlo in 2011.   Prior to joining Northrop Grumman\, Jeff was TRW’s customer on a commercial satellite effort called Astrolink during the period that Wes Bush lead the TRW Ventures organization.  TRW Ventures was an effort to leverage TRW’s advanced technologies in commercial application. \nPrior to Astrolink\, Jeff spent 22 years at the CIA within the Directorate of Intelligence\, the Directorate of Science and Technology\, and as office director in the Community Management Staff working under then CIA director Jim Woolsey.  During that time\, he learned the extraordinary value of protecting sources and methods–and how hard it was to do so while making the data product a valuable new collection capability available to the analytic community\, while still managing to protect it from being revealed\, \nJeff retired in 2018 with no plans for his retirement.  After considering writing a book about his experiences at the NRO\, he found himself challenged by Heather Laychak (formerly NG Human Relations) to write a book about what could be true.  The end result is “The Swamp: Deceit and Corruption in the CIA\,” a work of fiction described by James Clapper\, former Director of National Intelligence\, as a “spell-binding spy mystery which has an unnerving resonance with events of the day.”

SUMMARY:2018 TRA Summer Reunion
DESCRIPTION:The closure and renovation of the Proud Bird\, and now the closure of the Ports O’Call restaurant\, eliminated two of our favorite gathering spots. Fortunately\, our events committee\, led by Marcy Morrison\, has identified new locations and dates for our Summer Reunion and Holiday Party. \n  \nOur Summer Reunion will be held on Sunday\, July 8 at the South End Racquet & Health Club in Torrance from 11 am to 3 pm.  This location will be perfect for a summer get-together. The main ballroom seats up to 300 people so consider inviting your friends. \nFor lunch we will have a catered buffet with chicken marsala or roast salmon in a lemon grass\, tomato\, and dill sauce; green beans almondine; garlic mashed red potatos; house green salad with ranch dressing; and coffee/tea/lemonade. For dessert there will be a cookie assortment. There will be a no-host bar available for wine\, beer\, or mixed drinks. \nIf you have a dietary restriction\, give us a call at 310-813-7745 and leave a message and we will make arrangements. \n\nFor our speaker we are pleased to have David Zabalaoui\, Space Systems Division Director of Strategy at Northrop Grumman\, who will give us an update on the company.David has over 30 years of aerospace and defense experience. Before transitioning to his current role\, he led Space Systems Business Development\, and prior to that\, he led Operations and Integration for the Business and Advanced Systems Development organization\, where he provided functional leadership across a breadth of activities including business management\, human capital strategies\, proposal development and operational effectiveness. \nEarlier in his career\, he served as Director of Operations for Space Systems Business Development\, leading process development and implementation\, cross-sector initiatives\, and day-to-day operations. He has also held leadership roles in marketing and market development. He began his Northrop Grumman career as a System Engineer working across multiple space programs. David also served in the U.S. Air Force at the Space and Missile Systems Center\, Los Angeles AFB\, California\, where he held a variety of roles in the Milsatcom mission area addressing terminal to satellite interfaces\, user requirements\, and system engineering. In his final assignment\, he served as the Milstar Joint Program Office Executive Officer. \nHe earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California as part of the TRW Fellowship Program. SUMMARY:Special Event - A Chocolate Tasting Adventure with Hawaiian Chocolate and Cacao Association Member and Grower David Vandervoet
DESCRIPTION:TRA is pleased to announce a special event on April 26 with retired TRW vice president and TRA member David Vandervoet. \nProducing premier chocolate is more complex than producing premier wine. Most people have not tasted premier chocolate and the taste\, like wine\, varies depending on the region where it is grown. Come and experience a blind tasting of 6-8 premier chocolates produced from cacao pods grown around the world and decide which you like the best. \nThis event is being held Thursday\, April 26\, 2018\, from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The club is at 516 18th St\, Manhattan Beach\, CA 90266.  Light refreshments will be served before the presentation and chocolate tasting. \nThe cost is $18 per person and the event is limited to 30 people.  Sign-ups\, including payment through Paypal\, are available firstcome\, first-served\, on our website at www.tra-spacepark.org. No mail-in or phone sign-ups will be accepted. \nThanks very much to the MBBC board for allowing us to have our event at the club. Parking is limited\, so consider arriving a few minutes early to be able to find a space in the club parking lot or on the street. \nLooking forward to seeing you there. \nUnfortunately\, this event is full and we can take no more reservations.  Thank you for your interest!
